Hairoglyphics
Hairoglyphics is a Los Angeles-based spa that provides a variety of services in an Egyptian atmosphere. Their services include: full hair extensions, color and cut, full body massages, luxury skincare treatments, threading, and all-natural waxing. Hairoglyphics provides a personalized and luxurious experience, leaving their customers with a rejuvenated mind, body, and soul. The rebrand consists of an image mark, combo mark, logotype, collateral, style guide, exterior signage, and retail packaging.
Research and IDEATION
When coming up with ideas for the image mark, I first wrote down words that came to mind with I thought of Egypt. I then wrote down another set of words when thinking of a salon. After compiling my list, I drew out a matrix — the x-axis consisting of “Egyptian objects”, the y-axis “salon objects”. My goal was to come up with a mark that represented both Egyptian luxury and a salon feel. Creating a matrix was super helpful when combining objects/ideas together that I normally wouldn’t think of! In the end, I merged The Eye of Horus with that of the handle on a pair of hair cutting scissors. See above for some of my initial sketches.
After researching ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and learning more about the formation of the symbolic writing system, I morphed together Egyptian logograms with simple pictographs depicting common items you’d find in a salon. A geometric and modern type was constructed to illustrate the clean and luxurious salon. This logotype is used as a secondary logo for the salon.
